I hate that people try to make standing in unity out to be a sign of weakness, as if to imply that, “You weren’t strong enough to stand on your own, so you had to go and become a part of a group…”. It’s those same type of thinking that keeps a number of people away and apart from the church, and ultimately apart from the LORD, WHO just so happens to be a huge advocate of unity; folks coming together to accomplish something they couldn’t do on their own. Unity reflects the KINGdom, which reflects its KING.
John 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
It’s an unfortunate belief that conformity to CHRIST means loss of individuality (as if individuality should even be lorded and/or fought for to that end), but that conformity to the world doesn’t equate to that same loss. This double-standard creates rebels where there shouldn’t be and clones, conversely, tossed to and fro with every feeling and opinion given eyes, or legs thanks to the internet and itching ears. We devalue being a part of something bigger than us if we can’t control it; we run away from selflessness because we haven’t been taught, or don’t care to be, of the importance of others, FIRST…everyone, together: we like to think we’ve earned or deserved the attention without the inclusion of someone else taking away from our ‘shine’.
It’s pretty safe to say that if you’re not a good team player, you’re not a good CHRISTian…or a productive one…which puts you in a grey area that doesn’t actually exist (catch that). One of our main goals is or should be, to see the parts become whole. Independently and separately, our value is good, but together, our value is great; to boot, JESUS didn’t die for one of us, but for ALL of us.
Society has desired and conspired to, however aggressively or slyly executed, to impart a hatred and disdain for the things of GOD, which is why disciplining children is out of style and punishable by everything from public ridicule to governmental interference and investigation into your parenting skills, and the church is not necessary because ‘it’s not about religion, but relationship’, which everyone has if they want, nevermind how non or anti-Bible lifestyle they lead (because GOD knows their hearts…bless them). But see, that’s just it: being a part of The Church, a church, requires being unified which requires humility (the non-boisterous strength); buying into something greater than you…being led by someone other than you.
It’s GOD’s heart, and my desire, that we celebrate the uniqueness unity brings; there’s nothing like a group of Believers all on the same page, all after the same thing. Ask those guys in the Book of Acts; there’s power not simply in numbers, but in unity. Conversely, we come apart when we don’t come together.
